Nectar’s + WRUV + hope all is well present:
Vansire is the project of Josh Augustin and Samuel Winemiller, two high school friends from Minnesota that began recording music together after meeting on their school’s drumline. An unabashedly DIY affair, all of their music is created in basements and bedrooms, self-released to a burgeoning online scene of bedroom pop listeners and creators.
Three years of grassroots hype has seen Vansire grow from a summer side-project to a legitimate musical name with wide-ranging collaborations and multiple releases. April 2018 saw the release of their album Angel Youth. Augustin’s ambient synth washes, Dilla-informed percussive sensibilities and bookish lyricism combine with Winemiller’s sweeping guitar landscapes and warbled, Bibio-esque tones to form a wholly unique sound. Aided by Isaac Winemiller’s easy going funk-infused bass stylings, the music is a sonic reflection of the Midwest’s driftless region which they call home.
Kainalu is a psychedelic funk recording project by independent multi-instrumentalist, Trent Prall. Drawing influence from modern psych-rock and classic Motown artists he grew up listening to as a child, Kainalu’s unique sound has gained international appeal. Kainalu’s core is rooted in Prall’s Japanese-Hawaiian heritage; the word roughly translating to ocean waves, but more deeply the concept of the ocean rising and breaking down the islands through time and the impermanence of life. Kainalu explores this meaning through both its sound and visuals. Joined by a guitarist, bassist, drummer, and conguero, Prall creates a more jam-oriented live interpretation of his recorded music. Kainalu is touring this fall supporting their debut album, “Lotus Gate.”
